Percona, an open-source server maker well-known for working with the popular MySQL database, has branched out to make servers for MongoDB—another often-downloaded database.

The Durham, N.C.-based company on April 19 released the second version of its product for MongoDB 3.2.

This latest release is a fully compatible drop-in replacement for MongoDB Community Edition that comes six months after the initial release of the original Percona Server for MongoDB. It keeps pace with the development of MongoDB while continuing to provide more features and improved capabilities, the company said.
Percona Server for MongoDB has been downloaded by more than 30,000 users and 3,000 enterprises since its initial launch last fall. The server has seen renewal rates of more than 90 percent.
Completely open source and free to download and use, Percona Server for MongoDB offers all the features of MongoDB 3.2 Community Edition, along with two additional storage engines: PerconaFT and Facebook’s MongoRocks. It also offers enterprise-grade functionality that includes Simple Authentication and Security Layer (SASL) and advanced auditing. These additional capabilities provide enterprises with greater flexibility for managing their database infrastructures, the company said.

Percona Server for MongoDB also includes:

–full online backup support of PerconaFT and MongoRocks;

–an SASL Authentication plug-in, a feature found only in MongoDB Advanced Enterprise Edition; the plug-in enables authentication through OpenLDAP or Active Directory;

–an audit plug-in, another feature found only in MongoDB Advanced Enterprise Edition. The plug-in delivers security and compliance benefits by providing the ability to track and query the database interactions of users or applications, a critical feature for the compliance requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and SEC 17a.

–Remote DBA for MongoDB, providing architecture and design advice, project assistance and outsourcing, database tuning and performance optimization, and 24/7 monitoring and alert response tailored to a customer’s specific environment.
Percona Server for MongoDB 3.2 will be available in May. A release candidate is available now and can be downloaded here.
