IBM will announce Wednesday that its WebSphere Commerce Suite e-commerce software will support Linux on Intel-based systems.

Previously the software supported Linux only on mainframe systems. Its extension to Intel-based systems is expected to make the software more accessible to small to medium size business customers, IBM officials said Tuesday.

IBM will deliver the new Linux-on-Intel support in version 5.1 of WebSphere Commerce Suite, which will be available Nov. 30.

WebSphere Commerce Version 5.1 for Linux will support Red Hat and SuSE Linux, with a starting price of $5,000 per processor for Start Edition, and $52,000 per processor for Pro Edition, officials said.
