AT&T Corp. today named a new president, William Hannigan, formerly chairman and CEO of Sabre Holdings Corp.

Hannigan replaces Betsy Bernard, who took over as president in October 2002. Bernard said in a press release today that she looks “forward to finding the right leadership opportunity” in the next phase of her career.

The Bedminster, N.J., company has undergone a number of key leadership changes this year, including the replacement of top network executive Frank Ianna.

Hannigan worked at Pacific Bell and SBC Communications Inc., where he led the companies business units. Long distance carriers increasingly are looking to business customers as a source of revenue growth, as the residential voice services business appears to offer little opportunity for growth.

“Bill has a deep understanding of the telecom industry. His career has spanned jobs in operations, technical support, sales, and numerous general management assignments with particular depth in business services,” said David Dorman, chairman and CEO of AT&T.

Hannigan also worked at Sprint Corp. earlier in his career, and he served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service for six years.
