BMC Links IT Assets, Business Services

BMC Software Inc. on Monday will launch the MasterCell technology acquired last April with its IT Masters acquisition under a new moniker and with further integration into BMCs management tools.

The Houston company on Monday will launch its new Service Impact Manager, which automatically links IT assets with the business services they support, detects any changes in the status of those assets and communicates the impact of those changes to targeted users, according to Mark Levy, director of product management for BMC in Los Angeles.

The tool models and visualizes how IT components support a business service and provides drill-down capability in the event of an outage.

The updated software includes new bi-directional integration with the Patrol Enterprise Manager, allowing it to gather event data from the BMC event manager. It can also integrate with other event management systems, such as IBMs Tivoli Enterprise Console. BMCs Service Impact Manager also provides bi-directional integration with BMCs Remedy help desk trouble ticketing system.

“The Patrol integration was significantly enhanced to make it easier to integrate existing systems managed by Patrol,” said Gary Davis, product manager for Service Impact Manager in Houston. The new release exploits more Patrol features and functions, such as the Patrol Knowledge Module for event management, and it can take advantage of new mainframe support in the Patrol Event Manager, he added.

BMC split up the event management function in the original MasterCell tool to create a separate BMC Event Manger, which will also launch on Monday. It collects, processes and automates events from the IT infrastructure—automatically reducing the large number or redundant events caused by the same outage—and then displays the results in user-customized views based on roles and preferences. It then feeds these results to the Service Impact Manager to help prioritize ITs response to outages.

BMC Service Impact Manager is available now in a new service starter pack that includes the infrastructure, console and predefined service components for $80,000. BMC Event Manager starts at $50,000.
