Phone Marriage
Tellme Networks last week announced its acquisition of European competitor Magic Phone. Tellme, backed by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, supplies eXtensible Markup Language software that supports advanced voice applications for companies such as AT&T.
Interactive China
Hoping to tap the purchasing power of The Shanghai Cable Network Co.s 1 million broadband subscribers, OpenTV says it will roll out Chinas first interactive TV system. Shanghai Cable is one of the largest cable systems in the world, with about 4 million subscribers.
Outlook Bleak
Siemens board member Volker Jung says he thinks only about 400 million wireless handsets will be sold this year, 50 million to 100 million than most analysts expect. Siemens, the worlds third-largest handset maker, is cutting about 2,600 temporary jobs in its mobile phone manufacturing units.
Fiber Dims
Fiber-optic gear maker Corvis is eliminating about 15 percent of its 1,625-person work force and has asked for 250 volunteers to hit the road. Corvis, which has lost 79 percent of its value since its market debut last July, says it doesnt expect any new customers until the second half of the year.
Deal Fixed
Nashua, N.H.-based Spike Broadband Systems and Sonofon say theyll spend $400 million to roll out the worlds largest fixed wireless broadband network in Denmark over the next five years. The network will reach about 95 percent of the Danish population.
