    Partners for Integration

BEA Systems Inc. and Siebel Systems Inc. last week announced an expansion of their partnership to jointly deliver integration solutions.

BEA, of San Jose, Calif., and Siebel, of San Mateo, Calif., said they will support each others integration solutions, with BEA supporting Siebels UAN (Universal Application Network) out of the box and Siebel supporting BEAs WebLogic Integration and WebLogic Platform, the companies said. BEA and Siebel will partner on development, sales and marketing, as well as on emerging integration and process standards in the Web services arena.

BEAs lack of a strategic integration partnership with any major enterprise application vendor “was a recognized hole” in the companys strategy, said Morris Beton, senior vice president of business development at BEA.

Beton said BEA will offer out-of-the-box support for UAN in future versions of BEA WebLogic Integration and WebLogic Platform. Siebels UAN already supports WebLogic Integration 7.0. WebLogic Integration 8.1, with support for UAN Integration Applications, is available now in beta and set to ship this summer, Beton said.

      BEA, Siebel team up on:

      • Joint development, sales and marketing
      • Support of each others platforms—Siebel UAN and BEA WebLogic Integration
      • Support for XML and Web services standards such as BPEL4WS, XML Schema, XQuery and XSLT

“The BEA-Siebel partnership is an important one for both parties but, to me, more interesting for BEA,” said Stephen OGrady, an analyst with RedMonk LLC, a market analysis company based in Hollis, N.H. “BEAs obviously focused heavily on the integration space, and this is a significant addition to that story. Its also very important as organizations with large existing Siebel implementations look to integrate their [customer relationship management] data more heavily into other areas of the enterprise.”

Regarding standards support, BEA and Siebel are teaming on supporting in their products such standards as BPEL4WS (Business Process Execution Language for Web Services); XML Schema; XQuery (XML Query); XSLT (Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations); and Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition Connector Architecture.

Beton said BEA has selected Hewlett-Packard Co. as the preferred hardware platform supplier for the BEA WebLogic Integration and UAN solution. And he said Accenture Ltd. and HP will be BEAs strategic global systems integrators for BEA WebLogic Integration implementations on UAN.

“We have at BEA excellent support in the ISV community,” Beton said. “We have about 900 ISVs that support the platform.”
