GM Adds Voice to OnStar
General motors has taken another step in bringing the Internet into the automobile.
OnStar, a GM subsidiary, is licensing speech recognition technology from Nuance, which develops voice interface software, to give drivers hands-free access to Internet- based information such as e-mail, news and weather.
Nuances technology will be integrated into the OnStar Virtual Advisor platform. OnStar uses wireless and Global Positioning System satellite technologies to link cars to the always-on OnStar Center, where drivers can get real-time help. OnStar is in 1 million vehicles, and company officials expect that number to hit 4 million by 2003.
