Fourteen companies, including Alcatel, AT&T, British Telecom, Cingular Wireless, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB, Motorola Inc., Nokia, Nortel Networks and T-Mobile USA, have published a cellular-to-WLAN roaming specification that would extend mobile voice and data services to wireless LANs.
Ken Kolderup, vice president of marketing at Kineto Wireless, a mobile solutions provider and member of the group, said the specification could produce significant savings for customers using high-speed mobile voice/data networks.
“I think this is a service model that really makes a lot of sense for inclusion of Wi-Fi in mainstream mobile devices,” Kolderup said.
