LABS GALLERY: Cisco SIO To Go iPhone App Provides Valuable Security InfoBy Andrew Garcia

2Cisco SIO To Go for iPhone

      2

The Cisco SIO To Go application for iPhone delivers Cisco news and security information to the Apple device. The app is available for free from Apple’s App Store.

      3Feeds

      3

SIO To Go pulls down information from a variety of Cisco sources, including blogs, Twitter feeds and YouTube videos. Users can customize the feeds that are accessed (right). The aggregate from all feeds is shown in the default screen (left), which sadly does not organize the entries by timeliness or criticality.

      4Text Content

      4

Accessible data includes high-level reports (such as the Risk Report at left) and in-depth technical materials (such as the technical advisories at right).

      5Multimedia

      5

The application also presents audio and video materials, utilizing the iPhone’s QuickTime and YouTube playback capabilities.

      6Caching

      6

The application downloads and caches headlines when network connectivity is present. However, other content is not cached, rendering the application fairly useless when connectivity is limited or non-existent.

      7Lookup Tool

      7

The application includes a domain and IP address lookup tool that lets the user examine the Web reputation data and some WHOIS information for a given address.
