Certicom Corp. on Monday announced that it has extended its partnership with handheld maker Palm Inc. and will provide two security solutions for the companys new Tungsten W handheld.

Palm unveiled the new PDA Monday in New York.

Certicom, which specializes in creating security solutions for wireless devices, has developed new versions of its movianVPN and movianCrypt products specifically for the Tungsten W.

MovianVPN enables handheld users to establish secure connections with their corporate networks. It interoperates with most of the popular VPN (virtual private network) gateways and relies on IPSec encryption during transmission.

MovianCrypt utilizes 128-bit AES (advanced encryption standard) encryption and uses spare CPU time on the handheld to re-encrypt files. Also, the password for the software is not stored on the handheld, nor is it transferred between the device and the desktop PC during the synchronization process, making it far more difficult for an attacker to find.

Certicom, based in Mississauga, Ontario, has worked with Palm for about five years. The handheld makers new Tungsten line devices are Bluetooth-enabled and can be configured for remote e-mail and Internet access.

Certicom last week also announced movianVPN support for Microsoft Corp.s new Smartphone OS.
