Sales Start for Microsoft Lumia 950 Windows 10 Smartphone

Today’s topics include Microsoft’s Lumia 950 phone officially goes on sale, Microsoft previews the Hyper-V containers, Cray introduces Docker technology to its supercomputers, and LG drops its latest smartwatch due to hardware flaws.

Microsoft announced on Friday that its Lumia 950 and 950 XL smartphones are officially available in the United States just in time for the holidays.

Interested buyers have only one choice of carrier, however, since the handset is only currently available at AT&T physical and online stores.

Microsoft officially took the wraps off the new Windows 10 handset at last month’s hardware event in New York. The Lumia can provide a PC-like experience when it is linked to a monitor, keyboard and mouse with a Microsoft Display Dock.

Seeking an adaptive and responsive IT foundation for their business applications, CIOs are training their sights on container technologies.

Microsoft is catering to that crowd with its next version of Windows Server. Last week, the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant released the fourth technical preview of Windows Server 2016 operating system and System Center 2016 management software.

The new OS includes Hyper-V Container support, marking the first time the public can put Microsoft’s homegrown container platform through its paces since the technology was officially announced in April.

Cray will bring a Docker solution optimized for high-performance computing environments to its line of XC supercomputers starting in December and expanding into next year.

The application distribution technology announced last week will enable XC supercomputer customers to grow the number of applications that are available to them while reducing the time needed to deploy the applications on the system.

A week after LG announced the global distribution of its latest smartwatch—the Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE—the company is dropping the new LTE timepiece due to an undisclosed hardware flaw.

According to a Nov. 19 report by AndroidPolice, the problem, which LG has not fully detailed, involves a hardware issue which affects the day-to-day functionality of the device.” The company said it will decide at a later date whether the device will be available in the future.
