Wireless Developer Activity on the Rise Survey
As the wireless sector continues to gain market momentum, security issues for these networks are of paramount concern for many developers, according to a survey from research firm Evans Data. The survey, titled Wireless Development Survey, Volume I, 2003, indicates that the greatest increase for developers working on Bluetooth applications was Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and for 802.11, user authentication/passwords. Evans Data survey also explored issues related to the deployment of wireless Web services and wireless platform preferences among developers. According to the survey, wireless Web services-enabled applications are expected to see a significant increase in developer focus over the next 12 months.

AT&T Wireless Swings to a Profit
AT&T Wireless posted first-quarter earnings of $135 million, or 5 cents a share. Sales in the first quarter rose 9% from a year ago to $3.95 billion. Wall Street was anticipating first-quarter sales of $4 billion, according to Thomson First Call.

Motorola Jumps Into Home Networking
Motorolas broadband unit on Monday announced the retail availability of a key home networking component. The SBG1000 is an all in one cable modem, wireless networking access point, Ethernet router and switch, print server and advanced firewall. Motorola said the device guards against Denial of Service (DoS) attacks and detects intrusions.

Gartner Sees Japan 2003 Handset Sales Remaining Flat
Japanese mobile phone sales are likely to remain flat in 2003 as upgrade demand for photo phones is offset by a dwindling pool of first-time buyers in a saturating market, research firm Gartner Japan said Monday. Gartner said mobile phone handset sales in Japan fell 3.0 percent in 2002 from the previous year to 39.39 million units. There were 81.1 million cell phones in use in Japan in March, meaning six out of 10 people now carry mobile phones.

China Unicom Added 5.2 Million New Mobile Phone Subscribers in 1Q
China Unicom, the second-largest mobile phone carrier in China, gained 5.194 million mobile phone subscribers in the first quarter of this year. According to an earlier report from Bloomberg, the company expects to add 25 million subscribers this year– of which 13 million are expected to be CDMA accounts and 12 million GSM accounts. China Mobile, the worlds largest mobile phone service provider in number of subscribers, gained 6.13 million users in the first quarter.

Gemtek Lands NEC 802.11b Product Orders
WLAN equipment maker GemTek Technology recently landed WLAN orders from NEC, according to a DigiTimes report. The Taiwan-based company has been shipping 802.11b network interface cards and access points to the Japanese vendor since the end of last year, the report said.
