Microsoft, watch your back. With virtually all major server vendors expected to announce that their midmarket servers will ship with VMware’s ESX 3i hypervisor software installed, VMware is poised to become the 800-pound gorilla of the virtualization world.
On Feb. 26, Fujitsu-Siemens announced that it will ship its servers with embedded VMware ESX 3i hypervisor technology, while Hewlett-Packard on the same day also announced plans to embed VMware ESX 3i on its ProLiant line of servers.
Other major server vendors, including Dell and IBM, are expected to make similar announcements over the next 60 days. According to Mark Bowker, an analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group, Dell is expected to embed ESX 3i on all of its servers across the board.
