SuperMicro this week is rolling out a two-way 1U (1.75-inch) server powered by Intels Itanium 2 chip. The SuperServer 6113M-8 is the first in a series of Itanium 2-based systems the server company plans to release over the next few months. Other servers will range in size from 2U (3.5-inch) to 4U (7-inch).
The system comes with four hot-swappable hard drive bays for SCSI or Serial ATA. The Super i2DMR-8G2 server board features Intels E8870 chip set, which includes a 128-bit system bus aimed at high-end, two- and four-way systems, and the 500-watt SC813S-500 1U chassis, designed to reduce thermal problems, company officials said.
The server runs on an Itanium 2 chip with speeds of up to 1.5GHz and can tap up to 6MB of Level 3 cache. Pricing starts at $1,800.
