EMC Aim to Actively Control Health Care Costs

EMC Corp. is counting on a multipronged strategy to lower its employee health care costs. A year into its effort, the company said it can already see a payoff with its “consumerist” strategy that encourages its workers to take greater responsibility for their health and their health care costs.

The centerpiece of its efforts is an online program called HealthLink that lets enrolled workers compare drug costs, research ailments, and monitor their health. EMC says HealthLink is making workers more cost-conscious. In 2003, its HealthLink enrollees discontinued 8,000 brand name drugs and switched to cheaper generic brands.
