Google appears to be gearing up to release a new, more efficient version of its image generation tool, tentatively named Nano Banana 2 Flash.

According to a report from TestingCatalog, Nano Banana 2 Flash will be the next lightweight model within the Gemini ecosystem. It is expected to democratize access to advanced AI visuals, potentially offering capabilities previously restricted to paid subscribers — and it could be arriving very soon.

What makes this update especially interesting is TestingCatalog’s discovery of new internal references. The publication explains that Google’s earlier Pro version of Nano Banana 2 had the codename “Ketchup,” and now, a new entry labeled “Mayo” has appeared in the app’s code. That new label points to the Flash edition.

What the Flash version is expected to offer

The key purpose of the rumored Nano Banana 2 Flash model is speed and affordability.

Following Google’s established pattern, the “Flash” variant prioritizes low-latency generation, meaning super-quick image outputs over the pixel-perfect precision of its higher-end sibling, Nano Banana 2 Pro.

Crucially, this focus on efficiency translates into significantly lower operational costs for Google and developers. This efficiency is the very reason why many in the AI community believe the upcoming model could be made accessible to users who don’t pay for Google AI Pro.

“Early access to Nano Banana 2 Flash has revealed that its sample outputs closely match those of Nano Banana 2 Pro, suggesting performance parity at a lower operational cost,” according to TestingCatalog. This implies users may get Pro-level quality in a budget-friendly package, aligning with Google’s broader strategy to expand its AI capabilities to a wider audience without sacrificing too much quality.

What does this mean for free users?

The potential rollout is particularly exciting for the non-paying user base. The high-quality Nano Banana 2 Pro has so far remained a paid, premium offering, leaving free users without access to the latest image generation features. The arrival of the Flash version could finally close that gap.

If this holds, NotebookLM users stand to benefit as well. Currently, its image-style generation relies entirely on Nano Banana Pro, blocking anyone outside the paid tier. A Flash release could allow free users to generate visuals, though reports note that rate limits are expected.

Although Google has yet to issue an official statement, reports indicate the company is likely in the final stages of preparing the model for public distribution.

Across social platforms, several users have posted what they say are early samples from the new model, with some claiming to already be testing it. One user on X, @fAIkout, wrote, “Nano Banana Flash (powered by Geminin 3 Flash) is coming soon. Available in 1K, 2K and 4K. Testing now.” While these posts cannot be independently verified, they reflect growing confidence within the community that the launch is close.

Adobe has launched Photoshop, Adobe Express, and Acrobat inside ChatGPT, letting the platform’s huge audience experiment with creative tools without switching apps.
