Hyundai showed off something a little different from its usual cars this week: a small, flat machine on four wheels that might become one of the company’s most important products yet.

At the International Robot Exhibition 2025 in Tokyo, Hyundai Motor Group unveiled the production-ready version of its Mobile Eccentric Droid (MobED). The machine first appeared as a concept at CES 2022, but Hyundai has now turned it into a fully autonomous platform powered by artificial intelligence.

The company described the unveiling as its first real step into mass-produced mobility robots, a sign that robotics will sit alongside cars in Hyundai’s future.

“Beyond a simple mobility platform, MobED offers a next-generation solution adaptable to diverse industries and everyday life,” said Dong Jin Hyun, VP and head of the company’s Robotics Lab. “MobED will set new standards in the global robotics market and accelerate a future where humans and robots coexist.”

MobED is essentially a compact, four-wheeled base designed to carry out tasks without human intervention. The robot uses AI navigation, cameras, LiDAR, and an advanced posture-control system that keeps it level on uneven ground.

Because it is built as a flat platform rather than a humanoid or animal-like robot, Hyundai says it can be fitted for a wide range of uses, including deliveries, logistics, research, film production, or indoor service work.

According to Hyundai, the robot is designed to work both indoors and outdoors and does not require separate versions for different environments. Two configurations were introduced: MobED Basic, intended for research teams, and MobED Pro, which includes extra autonomous features for commercial tasks.

AI at the center of Hyundai’s mobility push

Hyundai’s move into robotics is not new, but MobED marks the company’s first step toward large-scale sales. The firm created its Robotics Lab in 2019 and bought Boston Dynamics in 2021, later announcing major investments in AI and next-generation technologies.

Hyun told Bloomberg in an interview that the robot’s software architecture is closely related to Hyundai’s vehicle systems, saying the platform “is very similar to vehicles in terms of software.” He added that knowledge can flow both ways, improving both the robot lineup and Hyundai’s car division.

He also highlighted how robotics can reduce risks in dangerous environments, saying, “That kind of task should be replaced by some robotic solution I think. We can make people’s lives safer and comfortable.”

Hyundai has not disclosed pricing or production targets. Still, the Robotics Lab expects MobED to gain momentum quickly, with Bloomberg reporting a goal of 10,000 units sold within three years once manufacturing scales up. The company says mass production is set to begin in the first half of 2026.

Elon Musk’s three-year bet that AI could help tackle US debt is unpacked in a recent conversation with investor Chamath Palihapitiya.
