OpenAI on Wednesday introduced ChatGPT for Academic Researchers. This new initiative will provide free access to its most advanced AI tools for up to 100,000 scientists, mathematicians, and engineers at eligible academic institutions through 2027.
The rollout begins this summer with 10,000 researchers at institutions including the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) and France's École normale supérieure (ENS), before expanding to 100,000 participants over the next year, according to OpenAI.
Approved researchers will receive 12 months of complimentary access to a dedicated ChatGPT workspace with up to five seats, allowing them to invite four verified collaborators from the same institution.
The package includes GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, ChatGPT Work, Codex, higher usage limits, larger context windows, business-grade security protections, and expanded research capabilities. OpenAI said workspace data will not be used to train its AI models by default.
OpenAI said the initiative is part of a broader commitment of more than $250 million through 2027 to support external scientific research, alongside its NextGenAI program and collaborations with the US Department of Energy's Genesis Mission.
According to the company, roughly 1.3 million people already use ChatGPT each week for advanced science and mathematics, generating about 8.4 million messages. OpenAI said researchers are increasingly using ChatGPT and Codex throughout the research process, from generating hypotheses and reviewing literature to writing code, analyzing datasets, and preparing grant applications.
The company said participants will also gain access to more than 75 life science skills, including genomics, protein modeling, sequencing, and drug discovery, as well as connectors to scientific literature, public databases, computational notebooks, and other research resources.
Who qualifies
The program is open to eligible faculty members and postdoctoral researchers affiliated with participating academic institutions in supported countries.
Applicants must verify their institutional affiliation through SheerID, submit a recent research paper from arXiv, bioRxiv, or ChemRxiv within eligible scientific fields, and explain how they plan to use ChatGPT in their research. Approval is not guaranteed, and all collaborators must belong to the same institution.
The complimentary workspace does not renew automatically after 12 months, and OpenAI said users will be informed of any continuation options before the offer expires. API credits are not included.
Balancing access with closed AI systems
While OpenAI is widening access to its latest models, it continues to limit access to the underlying model weights and training data.
That remains a point of contention among some AI researchers, who argue broader access is necessary for independent safety evaluations, reproducibility, and transparency. OpenAI maintains that restricting model weights helps reduce the risk of misuse, while focusing this program on helping researchers apply AI to scientific work rather than study the models themselves.
The program also extends OpenAI’s academic presence beyond ChatGPT Edu. Giving researchers a year to build workflows around its tools could encourage broader adoption across universities and research organizations.
