Siebel Systems Inc. announced the appointment late Monday of Richard Chiarello to head its worldwide sales operations after financial analysts had reported earlier in the day that William McDermott, who took over the position 15 months ago, was leaving the company.
The company made no mention of McDermott in its announcement and did not respond to a request for comment on his status, saying that Chiarello was replacing Senior Vice President Mark Hanson, who was heading sales on an interim basis. Hanson is expected to remain with Siebel.
McDermott joined Siebel as executive vice president of worldwide sales operations in June 2001, coming over from Gartner Inc., where he had been president. Siebels sales, like sales of most customer relationship management software developers, have fallen for four straight quarters since then.
Financial analysts expect that trend to continue in the third quarter, which ends Sept. 30.
Chiarello will take over the top sales job at Siebel effective Oct. 1. He previously was the executive vice president and general manager of worldwide sales at Computer Associates International Inc. and has also held sales management positions at IBM.
