Windows storage specialist PowerQuest Corp. this week released V2i Protector 2.0, focusing on incremental disk-based backup.
“We believe now it will challenge the more mature file-based backup” products, Chief Technology Officer Don Kleinschnitz said in a recent interview, in Phoenix.
The incremental features of the new version include backing up only the hard disk sectors that have changed since the prior backup; faster performance than the prior version, 1.1; and point-in-time recovery features, said officials of the Orem, Utah, company.
There is also a new graphical user interface and increased language support, they said.
Besides the incremental features, the new version also expands its connectivity. V2i Protector can now recognize any device that Windows itself can, such as storage connected by Firewire, Universal Serial Bus or even iSCSI, officials said.
Linux support will come next year, they said. For the current version, Windows 2003 is now supported, as is the older Windows NT. The prior 1.1 edition supported Windows 2000 and XP.
V2i Protector 2.0, which will ship June 19, starts at $995 per server and $79 per desktop, with volume pricing available.
