Dell Computer will issue a patch to fix performance issues on some of its Axim PDAs on Wednesday, according to company officials.
A Dell official called earlier reports that the fix would be pushed out until September “bunk”. The patch will be out Wednesday, from Dells web site, support.dell.com, the spokeswoman said.
However, users of Dells Axim X5 PDAs with Windows Mobile 2003 installed will need to download a sizeable 28-Mbyte patch, the Dell spokeswoman said. “In essence, they have to reload the operating system,” she said.
Users who had upgraded their Dell Axim X5s with the latest release of Microsofts PocketPC operating system, now called Windows Mobile, had suffered software slowdowns. As it turned out, a firmware bug had caused the PDA to expend more resources than it needed to caching data, slowing down the performance of applications.
