Hewlett-Packard Co. on Monday announced the upcoming availability of the second version of its HP-UX 11i Unix operating system for the Intel Itanium processor family.

While the product is expected to be released for the Itanium processor family by the end of July, it will also be rolled out for other hardware platforms as these become available, Mike Wardley, the, worldwide marketing manager for HP-UX in Palo Alto, told eWEEK.

HP is not going to release 11i v2 for the PA-RISC architecture as many of the features and functions have already been added on top of version 1 for that architecture, he said.

HP-UX 11i version 3, expected to be available toward the end of 2004, will support both the Itanium and PA-RISC architectures, Wardley said.

HP-UX 11i v2 will provide 64-way Itanium processor performance scalability and include networking and storage solutions for Itanium-based systems, including dynamic expansion of storage components and extended support for Gigabit Ethernet and Gigabit Fibre, he said.

The release also extends the virtualization offered on Itanium-based systems through the use of the HP-UX Partition Manager software and the integration of Serviceguard and Workload Manger software.

“HP-UX 11i v2 for Itanium processor-based systems also offers near functional equality and binary compatibility to HP-UX 11i v1 for PA-RISC,” Wardley said

In addition, the release offers continued integration with database applications, including enhanced Oracle9i RAC environments and on-line JFS 3.5 enhancements.

HP-UX 11i v2 also features two new security installation tools designed to enhance and simplify the securing of HP-UX servers: HP-UX Bastille v2.0 and the Install-Time Security tool.

HP on Monday also announced that more than 15 additional ISVs have agreed to port their applications to its Itanium 2-based server platform running 11i v2. These include Active State, Baan and Critical Path Software, Inc.
