LAS VEGAS–One of the coolest, not to mention, smallest items we saw at Digital Experience was the Ultra Personal Computer Model 01 from OQO. Weighing in at approximately 1.4 ounces (yes, thats right, ounces), the Model 01 measures 4.9×3.4×0.9 inches. Its based on the Transmeta 1-Ghz processor and runs Windows XP (home or professional). The screen is an 800×480 wide-VGA 5-inch screen. It has built-in 802.11b wireless and Bluetooth, a USB 1.1 port, a FireWire port, internal microphone and stereo headphone jack.

But this is much more than a PDA. It features a 20 GB, 1.8-inch single platter hard drive and 256 MB DDR DRAM, so it can run virtually any standard XP program. It also comes with a docking cradle that gives the Model 01 pretty much full desktop capabilities. The docking cable provides for connection to external VGA monitors (both with male and female jacks) at resolutions of up to 1280x1024x24 bit, an additional USB and FireWire port as well as an integrated 10baseT-wired Ethernet connection.

The Model 01 is powered by a 15-watt per hour lithium polymer battery that will provide from two to six hours of operating time. A fuel gauge (multiple LEDs) on the rear of the device shows you the current status of the battery.

Dont rush out to buy one of these uPC (ultra portable computers) today. Its expected to be released sometime in the second half of the year. Depending on options, it is expected to sell in the same price range as an ultra-light notebook for approximately $2,000.
