After AMD purchased graphics heavyweight ATI four years ago, industry watchers began wondering how long the ATI brand would survive, and today we seem to have an answer. Although AMD was promoting the ATI legacy as late as the first week of August, reports published overnight at Anandtech and Techreport claim that, after customer research indicated that the AMD brand was stronger than the ATI moniker, AMD executives have decided to drop the “ATI” label from its graphics product lines. At some point later this year, say these reports, the next line of graphics hardware will be released as “Radeon” and “FirePro.” I suppose I should get all misty-eyed about this, but today, I just don’t have the time; I’m sure some other dinosaur who actually cares about graphics will do a better job of valedictory than I could hope to do.
