Among the top challenges often cited for cloud adoption is security, which is why Rackspace has a managed security service that it offers to customers. Rackspace first announced its managed security service in September 2015 and is now expanding the offering to support Microsoft Azure customers.

While Rackspace operates its own OpenStack-based public cloud, it now also offers support for Amazon and Microsoft Azure customers as well to both operate and now secure cloud deployments. In a video interview with eWEEK, Rackspace CTO John Engages discusses the Rackspace Managed Security service.

“Threats are more sophisticated and they are coming at you at a higher rate of speed, so it’s just harder to be good at everything,” Engates said. “So we at Rackspace have embraced the problem on behalf of our customers and have created a security as a service offering.”

The Rackspace Managed Security service isn’t something that was built in vacuum, but rather benefits from multiple technologies and Rackspace’s own experience managing public cloud infrastructure.

“With our work having to defend a public cloud and having to work with other vendors across the ecosystem in the security space, we have just learned a lot of things–trial by fire style,” Engates said.
