SonicWall is adding multiple new features to its product portfolio, in a bid to help organizations further secure their on-premises and hybrid cloud assets against threats.

Among the new features coming to SonicWall’s Capture Cloud Platform are zero-touch deployment options and software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) security features. The Capture Security Center is also being enhanced with new risk metrics to help organizations better manage risk. Additionally, SonicWall announced a pair of new unified threat management (UTM) firewalls that include integrated Power over Ethernet (PoE).

“SonicWall is releasing SD-WAN security features as part of SonicOS 6.5.3, the latest release of our firewall operating system,” Lawrence Pingree, executive vice president of product management at SonicWall, told eWEEK. “It offers our customers the ability to use SD-WAN without requiring any third-party SD-WAN hardware on-premises.”

SD-WAN is an increasingly popular option for organizations looking to replace costly MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) connectivity with public internet links. Pingree said many providers require the use of extra devices for their SD-WAN solutions or require the use of additional transport services.

The SonicWall approach looks to integrate SD-WAN capabilities with the company’s existing hardware, integrating Real-Time Deep Memory Inspection (RTDMI)-enabled cloud-based sandbox technologies for security.

      Capture Security Center Risk Meters

The Capture Security Center Risk Meters capability is a new feature in SonicWall’s Capture Security Center that provides personalized threat data and risk scores, adapted to individual situations to promote immediate defensive action.

“The computed risk score and threat levels are based on live threat data relative to existing or missing defense capabilities across the layers of defense,” Pingree said.

Understanding and measuring risk is a key component of enterprise cyber-security. A larger trend in the overall security market in 2018 has been the emergence of SOAR (Security Orchestration, Automation and Response) technology and approaches, which is a direction that SonicWall is headed toward as well.

“We continue to evolve our Capture Cloud Platform, which includes Capture Security Center, our single-pane-of-glass cloud management reporting and analytics solution,” Pingree said. “Our focus is to provide Automated Real-time Breach Detection and Response across the portfolio fabric.”

      Hardware

SonicWall is also launching two new hardware appliances, the TZ300P and TZ600P UTM firewalls. The new firewalls provide integrated PoE ports, which enable power deliver over Ethernet to connected devices.

“These appliances are net-new to the product line and are positioned as a step up from the existing TZ300 and TZ600 products,” Pingree said. “They are specifically designed to enable wireless, VoIP and IP camera surveillance deployments to save time, money and convenience by eliminating the PoE switch as a stand-alone product.”
