CA to Launch Latest Barrage of Linux Tools

Computer Associates International Inc. at next weeks LinuxWorld show in New York will launch its latest barrage of Linux tools that run across all of its product brands.

The Islandia, N.Y., software behemoth, hoping to make its name synonymous with Linux, will bring its total number of Linux offerings up to 60 with the latest releases.

The 12 new Linux offerings span the mainframe and distributed computing worlds and provide integration with existing CA offerings on other platforms.

In the distributed space, CA will introduce a pair of new BrightStor ARCserve 9.0 agents that provide backup and recovery in the distributed Linux world for both Apache and MySQL open-source environments.

“Were finding MySQL getting a lot of play right now, so we wanted to create tools for that. You will see a lot of other tools from CA over the near term to support that environment,” said Sam Greenblatt, senior vice president and chief architect for CAs Linux Technology Group in Islandia.

CA will also introduce eight new Linux offerings that cover both the mainframe and distributed computing worlds. Those include new Linux-based Unicenter management tools for managing IBM WebSphere application servers and Linux versions of the Unicenter Management Portal.

Unicenter Management for WebSphere is a Linux-based J2EE agent that allows administrators to view the status of Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs) and EJB interfaces.

Also debuting for both mainframes and distributed computing systems are new Linux versions of CAs eTrust Web Access Control software and CleverPath Aion Business Rules Expert tool.

CAs customizable business intelligence tool allows users to create business rules that can automate business processes.

The eTrust Web Access Control software allows Linux-based WebSphere application servers to be secured at each exit point and at each point of access in an EJB. It provides both “authentication and authorization for Web access control,” said Greenblatt.

Finally, CA will roll out a pair of new mainframe-based Linux versions of its Advantage CA-Easytrieve and Unicenter Network and System Management Job Management Option programs.

CA, no stranger to the Linux world, introduced its first Linux offerings in the spring of 1999. The software giant intends to make its mark in the Linux space.

“You will see things that are not typical CA. Our security modules went into open source and our File Scout backup is in there. We will use open source to create better standardization than we could do otherwise,” said Greenblatt.
