IBM announced it has completed the acquisition of CSL International, a provider of virtualization management technology for IBM’s zEnterprise System.
IBM initially announced plans to acquire CSL in July, with a definitive agreement to buy the company based in Herzliya Pituach, Israel. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
A strategic investment in the System z portfolio, the acquisition deepens the system’s consolidation and cloud capabilities by offering simplified management of the virtualization environment. CSL International’s CSL-WAVE software enables companies to monitor and manage their z/VM and Linux on System z environments by employing an easy-to-use interface. The software provides drag-and-drop simplicity to instantly create, discover, visualize and connect virtual servers to resources allowing clients to free up more skilled staff to address other business challenges. The software will become part of the IBM zEnterprise portfolio in early 2014.
“Around the world, companies of all sizes rely on IBM zEnterprise Systems for their efficiency, reliability and security,” Patrick Toole, general manager of IBM System z, said in a statement. “With CSL-WAVE software in our portfolio, it will be easier for new and existing clients to set up and manage clouds on the mainframe, enabling them to provide enhanced services and support around big data, analytics and mobile to their customers.”
The zEnterprise System enables enterprises to host the workloads of thousands of commodity servers on a single system for simplification, improved security and cost reduction. The combination of IBM and CSL International technologies will allow customers to manage all aspects of z/VM and Linux on System z virtualization, including CPU, memory, storage and network resources.
The acquisition closing comes on the heels of IBM’s recently announced enhancements across its entire zEnterprise portfolio including a new business-class mainframe, the IBM zEnterprise BC12 (zBC12), designed for the latest in analytics, cloud and mobile computing, and new industry solutions and enhanced software and operating systems.
Virtualization, a foundation of cloud computing, has been designed into the fabric of the IBM zEnteprise System z architecture since its inception nearly 50 years ago. IBM offers expansive scalability with a share-everything design point for maximum utilization—up to 100 percent—of computing resources. This announcement further extends the value of IBM’s cloud offerings.
IBM announced its new entry-level mainframe system that suits businesses of all sizes, the zEnterprise BC12 (zBC12), last month.
The new mainframe builds on IBM’s decades of experience in enterprise computing and is designed for the latest in analytics, cloud and mobile computing.
Moreover, starting at $75,000, IBM is making one of the most secure and technologically advanced enterprise servers attractive to organizations of all sizes, company officials said.
