Networking and direct-attached storage solutions company Buffalo Technology announced a slim, space-saving rack-mounted storage appliance, the TeraStation III Rackmount, aimed at providing a low-cost, storage solution for space-strapped small to medium size businesses.
The solution will be available in late August at estimated street prices of $1,299.99 for the 2TB model, $1,799.99 for the 4TB model, $2,299.99 for the 6TB model and $2,999.99 for the 8TB model.
Incorporating a new hardware platform shared by the previously announced TeraStation III and TeraStation Duo, the TeraStation III Rackmount features dependable backup, eco-conscious power management, as well as enhanced business and reliability features. Along with higher capacities, Buffalo claims the new TeraStation devices allow businesses to transfer digital assets at faster rates to quickly and securely back up large amounts of data on multiple servers.
“Buffalo Technology has been an innovator in the SMB storage space for the last 30 years,” said Ralph Spagnola, Buffalo’s vice president of sales. “The latest TeraStation III Rackmount, along with the TeraStation III and Duo, are testaments to Buffalo’s ongoing commitment in delivering high-quality, robust storage solutions to the SMB market that are not only cost-effective but are able to meet the high demands of today’s business needs.”
To better function within the work environment, the TeraStation III family includes hot-swappable drives for continued use even in the event of drive failure. The devices also include disk encryption for protection, a controlled fan with a thermal sensor for optimal cooling, network file system (NFS) and Active Directory. Other features include cartridge-mounted HDD, print server functionality, RAID 5 (striped disks with parity, which combines three or more disks in a way that protects data against loss of any one disk) and an LCD status display.
The TeraStation III Rackmount, also includes new backup features such as replication, support for Mac’s Time Machine and hot spare/hot swap for uninterrupted operation. All TeraStation devices continue to offer Buffalo’s Web Access feature for remote access to all data stored on the devices via a Web browser from anywhere in the world. In an effort to further boost reliability, the new TeraStations include two Ethernet ports and internal flash boot.
Buffalo, like many other technology companies in the market, is also aiming to burnish its eco-friendly credentials and improve power efficiency. The company’s latest NAS devices offer power management features, which the company said reduces power consumption by 66 percent while simultaneously reducing CO2 emissions. These power management features include a scheduled power management system with three timers, allowing for automatic shutdown during non-business hours. The devices also include hard drive spin-down, which saves energy when drives are not in use.
