Packing as much as 2.8TB of storage in a small 2U (3.5-inch) rack unit, the Exabyte Magnum 1×7 is an attractive autoloader for small and midsize companies.

The Magnum 1×7 kit I received came with an autoloader with one LTO-2 tape drive and a rack mount. The Magnum 1×7, which shipped in December, lists for $5,995. (It has a street price of less than $4,999.)

The Magnum 1×7 Autoloader can hold a maximum of seven LTO Ultrium-2 tapes for a total of 1.4TB of native storage or 2.8TB of compressed storage. The Magnum 1×7 Autoloader can transfer data at close to 93GB per hour at native rates and 187GB per hour at compressed rates. These rates should be more than adequate for shops with small workloads.

The included bar-code reader is a nice touch thats rarely seen in $5,000 autoloaders and makes tape management and automation easier.
