Maxtor Corporation said it had begun shipping a 300-Gbyte parallel ATA drive to retailers.

The drive emphasizes capacity over performance, with a drive spindle that spins at 5,400 RPMs. The drive uses Maxtors exclusive ATA-133 interface, which the company is holding onto as rivals begin to ship Serial ATA drives.

The 300GB Hard Drive Retail Kit will be priced at $399.95, and is designed for both the PC and Macintosh. An ATA-133 PCI adapter card is included.

“The 300GB Hard Drive Retail kit offers essential storage needed for extensive multimedia and digital applications,” said Anna Jen, senior director of retail product marketing at Maxtor, in a statement. “Who would have ever imagined that so much capacity could be packed into a single, easily accessible, disk drive.”
