SGI and Promise Technology roll out solutions for the midmarket, while Exabyte announces an LTO-3 tape library with Fibre Channel and CA adds hierarchical storage management capabilities to BrightStor.
- Silicon Graphics Targets Midmarket
Silicon Graphics Inc. of Mountain View, Calif., has introduced new rack-mounted servers and storage systems with aggressive pricing, designed to allow small and medium-sized companies to scale up as needed.
The SGI Altix 330 Linux server provides a dense 1U (1.75-inch) form factor and scales to 16 processors and 128GB of memory per system. The midrange server, which starts at about $7,000, offers I/O at 6.4GB per second.
The SGI InfiniteStorage S330 storage array, starting at $12,599, offers data protection features that include RAID, global hot spares, online storage management, redundant hot-swappable components and automated path failover. The array also offers storage partitioning, volume snapshots, remote mirroring and volume copy. Configurations range from 2.8TB to more than 16TB of total capacity.

- Promise Technology Introduces Fibre Channel, iSCSI Arrays for SMB market
Promise Technology Inc. of Milpitas, Calif., has introduced a series of SATA (Serial ATA) RAID storage systems for small and midsize businesses.
The Promise VTrak M-Class iSCSI-to-SATA storage solution has dual host ports and 8, 12 or 15 hot-swappable drive bays in a rackmount chassis. With 15 drives, the units can support up to 7.5 terabytes. All models in the Promise VTrak M-Class family offer SATA II features, including 3GB-per-second speed, NCQ (Native Command Queuing), staggered spin-up and drive hot-swap support.
The VTrak M-Class also offers several data protection features, including PDM (Predictive Data Migration), PerfectRAID and multiple assignment of RAID levels to selected LUN (logical unit numbers).

- CA Adds HSM Technology to BrightStor
Computer Associates International Inc. of Islandia, N.Y., will license Managed Server HSM (Hierarchical Storage Management) for Windows software from CaminoSoft Corp. of Westlake Village, Calif. to enhance its BrightStor storage management solutions.
The combined software product, to be marketed by CA under the name BrightStor HSM, will add Managed Server HSMs policy-based capabilities, which automatically migrate infrequently accessed files from higher to lower cost media, to BrightStor. Managed Server HSM allows users to customize policies—another feature that will be added to the combined solution.
BrightStor HSM will be available in the fall.

- Exabyte Introduces LTO-3 Tape Library for Mac Environments
Exabyte Corp. of Boulder, Colo., has announced a new LTO-3 tape library with optional native Fibre Channel connectivity.
The 221L Plus Tape Library with LTO-3 provides two LTO-3 drives and 21 cartridge slots. Built with Exabotics, the automation robotics technology developed by Exabyte, the tape library offers capacities of up to 16.8TB and data transfer speed of more than 1.1TB per hour. The tape library also offers a compact 5U form factor and remote management capabilities.
The optional native Fibre Channel connectivity allows the data for each drive to be independently streamed rather than fed into a single bus or port, reducing drive or library failures as well as throughput bottlenecks.
Pricing begins at $17,299.
