Infineon Samples 4Gbps Fibre Channel Optics

Bidding for early status in the nascent market for 4Gbps Fibre Channel optics, Infineon Technologies AG last week announced that it is sampling transceivers based on 850nm lasers and demonstrating a 1310nm product at ECOC 2003. Component vendors are only now beginning to roll out products specifically targeted at 4Gbps Fibre Channel, one example being PMC-Sierra Inc.s announcement early this month. Part of the hesitation comes from the heavy attention devoted to the 10Gbps speed grade, where Sonet, Ethernet, and Fibre Channel were expected to harmonically converge. But in a surprise vote, the Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA) approved 4Gbps speeds for storage area networks, potentially expanding the market.

      Kashya Provides Inexpensive Data Replication

Kashya Inc. last week unveiled a data protection appliance that costs just a fraction of competing systems from top-tier vendors. Among the features Kashya packs into the KBX4000 are policy-based controls, bandwidth optimization, and the ability to replicate data for any distance in a heterogeneous storage environment, thus enabling customers to preserve their current infrastructure investment. “For years, the customer has been looking for a way to non-disruptively transfer data over long distances without impacting application performance and without being concerned with data consistency,” said Arun Taneja, founder of and consulting analyst for The Taneja Group. “Kashya is not only delivering on this promise, but has added additional features such as multiple replication policies and the ability to assign value to data via simple policy statements.”

Verizon to Offer Storage Services with EMC

In a sign that service providers have become more aware of their customers growing needs to secure, back up, and restore their assets in the event of business-altering disasters, Verizon Comminications Inc. last week said it will resell EMC Corp.s automated storage systems with its own networking services. Terms of the deal were not unveiled, but Verizon will bundle its metropolitan networks and advanced data networking capabilities with EMCs storage systems and software, and sell them through its enterprise solutions group. Analyst company IDC said in a recent study that worldwide spending for storage services is increasing by 6 percent a year and will reach almost $30 billion in 2007.
