QLogic will sell its disk-drive controller and tape-drive controller business; DataCore teams with emBoot for iSCSI remote boot capability; LSI Logic offers new 3GB/sec SAS expanders; Maxtor introduces a new network drive; and Silverback Systems develops an iSCSI storage stack for Intel-based systems.

      • QLogic Sells Hard Disk Drive Controller and Tape Drive Business

QLogic Corp. of Aliso Viejo, Calif., will sell its hard disk drive controller and tape drive business to Marvell Technology Group Ltd., a semiconductor manufacturer based in Sunnyvale, Calif. Under the terms of the agreement, Marvell will pay QLogic $225 million in stock and cash.

By selling these divisions, QLogic will be able to spend more time focusing on the SAN infrastructure component market, a higher growth market, according to QLogic CEO H.K. Desai.

The deal is expected to close by the end of October.

      • DataCore and emBoot Team for Remote Boot Solution

DataCore Software of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has combined its SANmelody and SANsymphony solutions with the netBoot i/software from emBoot Inc. of Mississauga, Ontario to enable diskless servers and rapid emergency recovery from the IP-SAN for server farms, utility grids, blades and VMware-based virtual infrastructures.

The combination of technologies allows Windows servers to remotely boot off of an iSCSI IP SAN using any standard Ethernet network interface card, potentially improving uptime, speeding recovery time and lowering costs.

      • LSI Logic Announces New SAS-Based ICs

LSI Logic of Milpitas, Calif., has introduced two versions of its new 3GB/sec SAS (Serial Attached SCSI). The LSISASx28 is a 28-port expander IC (Integrated Circuit), while the FLSISASx36 is a 36-port version.

The new SAS-based ICs, which support 1.5 and 3GB/sec SAS and SATA (Serial ATA) data transfer rates per port, use an ARM processor to provide a host of SAS functions. The products also employ physical layer-based zoning for network security applications and several initiator functions, such as self-discovery and self-configuration. The ports are also non-denominational, with initiator or Target connect, offer port-independent auto-negotiation, and support up to 1025 SAS addresses.

      • New Maxtor Drive Adds Automated Backup Functionality

Maxtor Corp. of Milpitas, Calif., has introduced a new network drive that includes a built-in media server to allow users to simultaneously back up, share and print digital files from one common location.

The Maxtor Shared Storage Plus drive, available in 200GB, 300GB or 500GB capacities, uses the companys backup software to enable users to back up data from their PCs to the new drive. It also can be connected to a network, acting as a centralized digital entertainment media server.

The drives SimpleView feature provides detailed backup and storage status and a wizard interface designates shared folders for full or limited access, sets backup schedules and simplifies file restoration. The product also automatically identifies and sorts more than 100 different Windows file types.

      • Silverback Systems Offers iSCSI Hardware/Software Stack to Help OEMs develop Intel XScale-based Products

Silverback Systems of Campbell, Calif., plans to offer a unified iSCSI target stack to storage OEMs, enabling them to more easily develop Intel XScale-based products. The iSNAP 2001 is a dual-port, gigabit Ethernet storage network acceleration processor offering full iSCSI offload capability.

The iSNAP 2110 is the first iSCSI target design to combine both hardware and software, increasing the OEMs ability to leverage designs across platforms, according to Silverback Systems vice president Ron Kroesen.
