Xiotech Preps Storage Clusters For Failover
Xiotech Corp., which makes storage area networks, next week will introduce Magnitude 3D, clustered storage thats designed to automatically react to outages and keep data flowing by shifting data to another device when a potential failure is detected. A Magnitude 3D cluster will include two nodes, each with a controller and eight host-bus adapters for connections to drives and switches. Each cluster can store up to 30 terabytes of data. Xiotech is the first SAN vendor to offer a cluster with failover capabilities, analyst Steve Kenniston of Enterprise Storage Group said.

Medea Ships FireFly Modular Storage Line
Medea Corp. this weekannounced the shipment of its FireFly line, a series of modular FireWire-based storage solutions that feature a docking station and removable disk modules that also operate as stand-alone FireWire drives. With FireFly, one disk module can be left in the docking station, while the other module can be used to create content as you work. When the module is replaced in the docking station, content can be automatically synchronized to provide a backup copy of your data.

DVD Burner Sales on Fire
Retail sales of laptop and desktop computers with DVD recorders jumped 550 percent in unit terms during the first half of this year, according to research firm NPD Group Inc. The number of laptops and desktops with internal DVD recorders sold by retailers in the first six months of the year hit 209,959, up from 32,297 in the first half of 2002, according to NPD. The dramatic increase in sales of laptops and desktops with DVD recorders relates to computer makers bundling DVD burners into their higher-end products, NPD analyst Tom Edwards said. He expects the sales trend to continue as DVD recorder prices fall. The number of home DVD recorder units for televisions sold in the first half of 2003 reached 58,000, up 316 percent from the first half of 2002, NPD said.

Disks Drive Hitachi into the Red
Hitachi Ltd. said this week it posted a quarterly operating loss, hurt mainly by mounting red ink from its hard disk drive business. Hitachi, maker of everything from plasma televisions to nuclear power generators, said operating losses totaled 33.73 billion yen ($280.5 million) in the first quarter ended June 30, compared with a profit of 13.69 billion yen in the year-ago period. Analysts had expected Hitachi to be in the red for the first quarter due to losses stemming from its storage business.
