Akonixs IM monitoring and management tool does a good job of using corporate policies to ride herd over the once-wild use of IM. Although the product raises real privacy concerns, especially with its ability to monitor IM conversations in real time, L7 Enterprise provides ways to warn users that they are being watched. Anti-virus and blocking tools that prevent unauthorized IM and P2P file sharing make this a full-featured IM management tool suitable for large enterprises.

Cost Analysis

L7 Enterprise lists for $45 per seat per year, which makes it a hefty addition to the desktop management budget. To judge the relative worth of the product, managers should assess its cost against the risk factors to which IM users—and the organization—are exposed.

(+) Streamlined installation; easy to manage; provides extensive control over IM and P2P traffic. (-) In-depth surveillance capabilities make it easy to abuse managerial privilege; can be costly.
