The Wall Street Journal kicked off a flurry of excitement and speculation on July 22, announcing that Apple, according to its own sources, was considering the possibility of launching a 13-inch iPad at some point in the future. The device isn't currently slated to launch any time soon, according to the Journal's sources, but Apple is at least seriously considering making the move. The company's current tablet lineup includes the iPad and iPad Mini, which have display sizes of 9.7 inches and 7.9 inches, respectively. A 13-inch alternative would be a major advance that would test whether tablet buyers want to work with significantly larger screens. Still, some question whether Apple should launch a 13-inch iPad. After all, the company has for the last several years been quite successful at offering its 9.7-inch model, and by going down in size to 7.9 inches, Apple was able to carve out another important piece of the market for itself. But we really don't know yet what is the optimal upper limit for a tablet. But there is a good chance users will like the extra screen space. Furthermore, it would do Apple well to launch the 13-inch iPad before the competition gets a chance. Whichever firm gets to 13-inch slates first will definitely find their products appealing to customers.

Apple has been content to stick with the same products over the last few years. Changing things up would allow Apple to show competitors that it's willing to do what it takes to be successful.

    Looking at the tablet space, there isn't much for companies to do other than increase screen sizes. Tablets need to be thin, and have prominent displays and small bezels.     One of the nice things about launching a 13-inch iPad is that the device could potentially run on iOS or OS X. After all, Microsoft has found a way to get Windows running on tablets. Wouldn't OS X be an ideal complement to the iPad? Apple is making OS X more touch-friendly. Maybe that's an intentional move on its way to the top of tablets.

    Then again, it's entirely possible that Apple, at some point, decides to ditch one of its operating systems and goes with a single software package. Bringing on a 13-inch iPad would make that transition a bit easier, since Apple could test the market and see if making such a move makes sense. It might not right now, but in five years, who knows?
