Each year that passes brings the inevitable deluge of consumer electronics, with the companies that hawk them issuing grandiose statements on how their smartphone, tablet, portable stereo system or smart TV is going to change your life in ways you never thought possible. While they may all suffer from a slight case of hyperbole, 2013 has produced a bumper crop of highly innovative, cleverly designed and, yes, perhaps even life-altering gadgets. Case in point: Samsung, Sony, HTC, LG and others have introduced this year a slew of Android-based smartphones and "phablets"—smartphones that approach the size and functionality of tablets—aimed at further eroding Apple's iPhone market share. Digital cameras are also getting more sophisticated, offering features such as WiFi capability and location-based mapping and geotagging, with many of these digital beauties wrapped in retro packaging, like the Olympus PEN EP-5. And there are some great media players, portable sound systems, eye-popping HD flat-screen televisions and a host of other awesome gizmos that manufacturers are betting you'll just have to have. Here's a look at some of the best we've seen so far in 2013.
