Roxio Launches Video Converter
Roxio, a division of Sonic Solutions, announced May 8 that it has released its Roxio Crunch, a software application that converts computer-based video file formats and DVDs into files that can be viewed on an Apple TV, iPod and the soon-to-be-released iPhone.
Roxios video converter, currently designed for Mac users, is able to covert QuickTime file formats such as DV (digital video), AVI (audio video interleave), MOV (movie file format) and MPEG-4 while also converting non-QuickTime file formats such as MPEG-2 and DivX (digital video express).
Roxio Crunch enables users to convert DVD movies and discs that were created with Toast, iDVD, DVD Studio Pro and other DVD authoring applications. The video converter also enables users to save space by selecting individual titles and languages, select audio tracks to use for each source DVD-title and capture screen shots of DVD video during preview.
With Apple TV, users are able to download movies, music and TV shows from iTunes and then sync wirelessly from their Mac or PC so that they can watch the downloaded movie, TV show or other entertainment content on their widescreen TV.
"Apple TV, iPod and iPhone are part of a new wave of devices that provide consumers with a broader range of options for how and where they enjoy their personal entertainment," Vito Salvaggio, vice president of the Mac Business unit for the Novato, Calif.-based Sonic Solutions, said in a company statement.
For the on-the-go traveler, the video converter from Roxio includes Batch export, which enables users to add multiple video files to be converted to their iTunes for synching. With batch conversion, users are able to mix and match content with 16:9 widescreen and 4:3 full screen aspect ratios.
"Roxio Crunch allows Mac and PC users to quickly and easily move more of their computer-based personal video content into the living room via Apple TV and enjoy the content on the road by sending it to their iPod or very soon, their iPhone," Patrick Nugent, product manager of Mac products for the Roxio division of Sonic Solutions, told eWEEK.
Roxio Crunch is available now as a Mac-only version for a price of $39.99. A Windows/Mac version will be available later this quarter for a suggested retail price of $49.99.
