SOA Software Acquires Reliable Messaging Company

SOA Software, a maker of SOA and Web services management, security and governance solutions, Monday announced today that it has acquired ThoughtDigital Inc., a service provider and maker of reliable messaging technology.

SOA Software Inc., based in Santa Monica, Calif., and formerly Digital Evolution Inc., acquired New York-based ThoughtDigital to beef up its portfolio of service-oriented architecture offerings, the company said.

SOA Software will integrate its newly acquired ThoughtDigital technology in its own Service Manager, registry and XML virtual private network offerings to create “the most complete SOA Fabric solution available today,” said Ian Goldsmith, a vice president at SOA Software.

ThoughtDigitals technology is based on the WS-ReliableMessaging specification, while SOA Softwares products have been in the Web services management, security and UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery and Integration).

Together these technologies cover the major areas of focus for SOAs, Goldsmith said.

ThoughtDigital started out as a consulting company delivering service and support for Oracle Software Corp. applications, and then the company started moving toward SOA, Web services and message-oriented middleware.

Goldsmith said SOA Software saw ThoughtDigitals ThoughtDigital Reliable Messenger and “We really liked it. We saw they were increasingly on a track to become completive with us.”

Goldsmith said ThoughtDigital will remain in New York, where it will serve as SOA Softwares professional services organization on the East Coast.

“What this does for us in a SOA context is gives us a really broad offering, and our focus is to be able to support event-driven architectures, not just client/server architectures,” Goldsmith said.

“So as far as positioning SOA Software past this acquisition, this allows us to cover all the areas our competition covers, but it allows us to do it with one company.”

Jason Bloomberg, an analyst with ZapThink LLC, of Waltham, Mass., said, “SOA Software already offered management, security and UDDI capabilities. By adding reliable messaging, they now have a complete SOA fabric offering, similar to, say, Blue Titan.

“This acquisition moves SOA Software more into competition with ESB [enterprise service bus] vendors like Sonic Software. ZapThink sees this news as part of the maturation of the transitional Web Services Management market, since enterprises are now realizing that management is only a piece of the SOA puzzle.

“SOA Software is now offering a broader spectrum of the infrastructure capabilities that companies need to run their SOA implementations.”

SOA Software announced its name change from Digital Evolution Inc. last week.
