Actional Corp. Monday announced a new version of its Web services management platform featuring SOA (service-oriented architecture) management and the management of other services.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Actional introduced Actional 5.1, which extends users management capabilities to non-SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) services such as databases, Web pages, middleware and non-XML legacy systems through the products Active Agents technology. Actional 5.1 features Actional Active Agent for JDBC (Java Database Connectivity), Actional Active Agent for JSP (JavaServer Pages) and Servlets, and Actional Active Agent for ASPX (Active Server Page Framework).

Actional 5.1 also includes new features in Actionals Looking Glass Web services management server and console that support SLA (service-level agreement) monitoring and enforcement, correlation across all tiers, root cause analysis and monitoring agents.

Actional officials said Actional 5.1 enables users to control an SOA from a single console, and it supports the entire SOA lifecycle. Also with Actional 5.1 users can partition service requests to track service activity and apply service-level policies, officials said.

Last week, San Francisco-based Blue Titan Software Inc. announced its Blue Titan Data Director, a native SOA data store designed as a way to enable enterprise architects to handle distributed data from service-based applications such as portals, business process management and mobile applications.

According to Blue Titan officials, SOA-driven data is typically stored using XML databases, relational databases and file systems, but all three are not entirely capable of handling the streaming nature of some SOA data and access to XML messages. Blue Titans Data Director addresses that issue, according to the company.
