Security planning and disaster recovery are unavoidable realities for network administrators and other IT staff members around the globe. At least, thats the impression you get when you read “Security Planning and Disaster Recovery,” by Eric Maiwald and William Sieglein.

Although IT security is important for every organization large and small, the authors zero in on the larger corporations that need to have a plan and have it implemented in order to destroy any threat that may be lurking around the corner. And, of course, the authors remind you to not forget to document everything from your morning coffee right down to switching the light off when you leave the office at night.

This book is all about the relationships that security staffs need to build with fellow employees, the laws and regulations that need to be adhered to within the company, the laws and regulations that exist in the outside world today, the methodologies needed to plan for disaster and, finally, the recovery plan that will save your company.

If you are part of a large company that has a legal department, a compliance department, a human resources department, an audit department, senior management and literally hundreds of end users—then sit down, cozy up to the fire and grab lots of wood for a long read. This book may be for you. Otherwise its a long piece of work with too much blah and not enough spice. Even if youre at a large organization, you may require lots of caffeine to make it through the tome.

This book should be read by every serious security staff member, and others may find useful the books great recaps at the end of every chapter referred to as “Checklists.”

Should you buy “Security Planning and Disaster Recovery”? Yes, if you want to be prepared for any eventuality that may lead to a system failure or loss of data.
