META Predicts Fibre Channel To Rule Through 2007

A week after the Internet Engineering Task Force ratified the iSCSI standard for storage networking, research firm META Group said Fibre Channel will continue to reign as the dominant SAN architecture in data center deployments in the SAN storage market through 2006, or even 2007. While research firms such as Gartner see iSCSI as having a $10 billion market potential in the future, ripping out and replacing Fibre Channel systems may not be an option for some businesses. META also called the SAN market “highly competitive“ among vendors and predicted it would undergo significant changes during the next two years, most of which will occur in storage management software.

Now Showing at UCLA Film School: SAN

UCLAs department of film, television and digital media produces some of the film industrys brightest stars. When students present their end-of-year film projects, its not just professors who are grading them. Representatives of some of Hollywoods major film studios sit in on the presentations to scout for future talent. Having a reliable and robust system for storing and working on digital film projects rates pretty high for these students. UCLA partnered with Vixel to construct a Fibre Channel storage area network (SAN) with 3.4 terabytes of storage capacity. The new system allowed the 36 student workstations to simultaneously access the network and perform digital post-production work. “Before we updated our system, wed typically lose one or two projects a year,“ Wade Coonfer, UCLA manager of digital post-production said. “Either the students would drop their drives or disconnect them so that damage or corruption occurred.“ Since implementing the SAN, the lab has not lost a single student project.
