Have SAN Your Way at EqualLogic

EqualLogic, a new SAN (storage-area networks) developer debuted its PeerLogic architecture at the recent Server I/O Conference. The company has worked on this architecture for 18 months, says CEO Peter Hayden. It promises to deliver modular, self-managing, affordable, IP-based storage networks. “You can start small and then grow by adding additional arrays,” Hayden said. “Whats really novel is that the arrays, both individually and collectively, are self-managing. Cisco Intros Open-API Program for Storage ISVs

Cisco Systems recently launched a technology development program for independent software vendors in the SAN management and storage resource management industries to integrate their applications to the Cisco MDS 9000 family of multilayer directors and fabric switches. The open-API (application platform interface) program includes a software developers kit (SDK) that gives companies full access to the 9000s set of standards-based SNMP management information base (MIBs), including SNMP v2 for discovery and monitoring, and SNMP v3 for secured configuration and access control. The MDS 9000 is ” an intelligent device, and additional software hosted on it could add even more intelligence to the network,” said Dan Tanner, Aberdeen Groups director of storage research. Platform vendors like IBM, HP and Sun Microsystems are also “adding intelligence to platforms,” he said.

The company said it expects the optical video recorders to overtake VHS recorder sales within two years. All of the new models can record to DVD-RAM or DVD-R discs, while the two entry-level models record to DVD only. The two high-end models can also record to a hard drive. The company is targeting yearly production about 1 million units a year, and it estimates this years total world market for DVD recorders will top 4 million units.
