Sybases Enterprise Application Server 4.1.1 includes a new Web-based administration console (see screen) that let me view the log remotely, as well as stop and restart the server. The update, which started shipping in May, also adds Web services support for PowerBuilder components, providing PowerBuilder users with a new way of reusing proven code. Web services support based on SOAP was added in EAS 4.1.
EAS continues to stand out for its multilanguage features: Java, C++, PowerBuilder and CORBA objects can be exposed through a Web services interface, although EAS client code generator currently generates only client access code in Java. Most application servers are Java-only.
Sybase also posted a very competitive ECPerf Java application server benchmark July 8—running on a two-CPU Dell PowerEdge 4600, it was about 10 percent faster and 10 percent cheaper than a BEA WebLogic benchmark (running late-beta code of WebLogic Server 7.0) on the same server hardware. This Sybase result is tied for second place in terms of price/ performance—Oracles application server is currently in first place for both price/ performance and overall performance.
