Following a trend toward more managed IP services, Lucent Technologies Inc. this week launched a new IP service router that allows service providers to offer managed IP services to enterprise customers.
With the Access Point 1500 router, available now, service providers can offer enterprise customers in both large regional headquarters and small locations a range of services from basic routing to advanced IP services such as VPNs (virtual private networks), firewalls and bandwidth management, officials said.
The Access Point 1500 is priced between $12,000 and $55,000. It provides IP forwarding rates of 700M bps, 3DES encryption rates of 155M bps and either as many as 1,500 IPSec site-to-site VPN connections or up to 5,000 remote-access VPN tunnels, officials said.
“In todays environment its important for service providers and large enterprises to deploy revenue-generating IP services without disrupting their existing IP infrastructure,” Joe Raccuglia, a senior product manager at Murray Hill, N.J.-based Lucent, said in a statement.
VPN services are a good example of the growth of advanced IP services. Between 2002 and 2006, worldwide end-user expenditures for managed customer premises equipment-based VPN services are projected to grow 178 percent, and for managed network-based services, 283 percent, according to Infonetics Research Inc., of San Jose, Calif.
The new router joins the Access Point 300 and 600 in the Access Point line, which is part of the Lucent Service Intelligent Architecture Portfolio for service providers.
The Access Point product line includes the Access Point QVPN Builder, a policy manager for IP VPNs, quality of service and firewalls that helps service providers deploy and manage site-to-site VPNs and other IP services in large networks.
