EMC: Big Data
EMC rolled out three new high-end storage systems in a refresh of its Symmetrix 8000 Enterprise Storage family. The new systems include the Symmetrix 8830, which holds up to 69.5 terabytes of data in a single cabinet and is the highest-capacity storage device in the industry, the company claims. EMC also introduced a new Fibre Channel switch that can connect one Symmetrix unit to 96 servers.
XM Delay
XM Satellite Radio postponed the launch of its satellite-based digital radio service because of the terrorist attacks last week against the U.S. The Washington, D.C., company planned to offer the first subscription-based service in San Diego and Dallas-Forth Worth markets on Sept. 12. XM did not say when it will launch the service, which will offer 100 commercial-free radio channels for $9.95 per month.
GoTo Picks New Name
Pay-for-placement search engine GoTo.com will change its name to Overture Services, effective Oct. 8. The company wants to clear up confusion with similar-sounding Internet sites, such as InfoSpaces Go2Net, Go2 Systems and The Walt Disney Co.s Go.com.
Lineo Cuts Staff
Lineo, a developer of embedded Linux software, will lay off 60 employees and will spin off peripheral technology projects, which account for another 100 workers, leaving the company with 110 employees. The privately held company recently announced licensing deals with Motorola and MP3.com.
Net Populi
About 42 percent of all U.S. households — representing 94 million people — had Internet access in 2000, up from 26 percent in 1998, according to a Census Bureau study issued this month. The study also says that almost 90 percent of kids ages 6 to 17 had access to computers, either at home or at school, last year.
