Today’s topics include Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon taking preorders for the LG G7 ThinQ handset, and IBM leading a “Call for Code” initiative for natural disaster relief.

LG’s latest flagship smartphone, the G7 ThinQ, has hit the preorder stage, with Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile all taking preorders now. The devices will be available from all three carriers starting June 1.

The three carriers are offering a variety of payment plans per device that total from $594 from Sprint to $750 from Verizon and T-Mobile.

The LG G7 ThinQ has a 6.1-inch Quad HD+ FullVision display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon SDM845 processor, 4GB of memory, 64GB of onboard storage, a microSD slot supporting expandable storage cards up to 2TB, and a fingerprint sensor for security. The LTE handset runs on the Android 8.0 Oreo operating system.

Also included are dual 16-megapixel cameras, including a standard and a super wide-angle lens, as well as an 8-megapixel front camera.

IBM, the United Nations, the Red Cross and other organizations launched a new project on May 24 named the Call for Code Global Initiative, which will bring startup, academic and enterprise developers together to create applications to help communities prepare for, prevent, respond to and recover from natural disasters.

At his keynote address at the VivaTech Conference in Paris, IBM Chairman, President and CEO Ginni Rometty committed a full measure of IBM technology and $30 million over a five-year period to the initiative.

IBM’s investment will fund access to developer tools, technologies, free code and training with experts. The winning app-building team will receive a financial prize and have access to long-term support to help move their idea from prototype to real-world application.
