Microsoft announced that it is doubling the amount of free OneDrive cloud storage to 30GB, from the recently upgraded 15GB limit. This is part of a limited-time offer that requires that users designate OneDrive as their photo and video backup destination.

Douglas Pearce, group program manager of Microsoft OneDrive, explained that the added capacity will show up for existing Windows, Windows Phone, Android and iPhone owners who already use the OneDrive camera roll option.

Microsoft is offering this in part as an alternative to upgrading to iOS 8, the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system.

The platform-as-a-service world has a new player, thanks to Ericsson’s Sept. 22 announcement that it is buying a majority stake in privately held Apcera. This news came the same day Apcera announced it is officially launching its Continuum PaaS platform.

Apcera’s founder and CEO Derek Collison is well versed in the PaaS ways, since he was CTO and chief architect of cloud application platforms at VMware from 2009 until 2012 and led the original design and development of the Cloud Foundry PaaS.

Microsoft’s Xbox one was slated to be one of the first consoles approved for sale in China through the Shanghai Free Trade Zone, with a release date set for Sept. 23.

Now, prospective buyers in China will have to wait longer, perhaps months, before they can take an Xbox One home. In a statement published on the company’s Chinese blog,

Microsoft said that it needed the extra time to work on final preparations with its partners and is targeting a release date before the end of the year.

Advanced semiconductor systems specialist Micron Technology announced the release of the M600 SATA SSD, a solid state drive designed to take advantage of Micron’s NAND Flash technology.

In an effort to meet consumer expectations for longer battery life, the M600 offers improved SSD power efficiency. It draws less than 2 milliwatts in sleep mode and averages 150mW during active use.
