Why BYOC Is Becoming a Legitimate Trend

Hot on the heels of the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) trend is this one: bring your own cloud (BYOC).

Sigh. Another market-speaking acronym aimed to promote a new IT product or service? Perhaps, but there is some substance here, not to mention a whole new market. This is because users now have the option to own a personal storage and collaboration cloud outside an enterprise’s, and the idea is starting to gain traction.

BYOC describes individuals who have their own “personal clouds” or corporate employees empowered to use public or private third-party cloud services to perform certain job roles. In the corporate version, BYOC involves the stitching together of enterprise and consumer software, both in the cloud and on premises, to get the job done.

Most of us are already walking around with our own private clouds to a great extent because where we go with our mobile devices, personalized cloud-based services follow. Wearable computing brings a whole other aspect—and a bevy of new markets—to BYOC.

In our eWEEKChat on Jan. 8, we will pose questions such as:

–How do you define owning and using a personal cloud?

–What new devices and cloud services will you be using in 2014?

–Are we getting too dependent upon cloud services at this point? What dangers may result?

–What is your stance on maintaining personal data in physical storage, then backing up in the cloud? Or do you trust cloud providers to store everything?

–What lessons can be learned from the crash of Nirvanix’s cloud storage business?

–How will BYOC affect online personal data privacy? Will it cause more problems, or not be much of a factor?

      Here’s How a Tweetchat Works

Who’s Invited: All those who use the Internet.

What: A Tweetchat is an online conversation held at a prearranged time following a specific hashtag. In eWEEK’s case, we will be using #eWeekChat for all of our Tweetchats. Chatroom real-time links: http://tweetchat.com/room/eweekchat or http://www.tchat.io/rooms/eweekchat.

      When: Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 11 a.m. Pacific Standard Time/2 p.m. EST/7 p.m. GMT.

Where: The chat also can be followed on Twitter using the hashtag #eWeekChat. A link to the recap (so you can see a record of what everybody tweeted) will be posted on this blog the following Friday, Jan. 10.

Why: The whole idea is to facilitate additional industry dialogue and provide a forum for questions, idea sharing and problem solving. We also want your input on what you’d like to discuss during future chats, so please leave a comment on this post or tweet @eweeknews with topic ideas.

Participants will be able to ask questions of eWEEK staff members and special guests or simply add their thoughts to the conversation. The only restrictions are that we stay on topic and that you say what you need to say succinctly (140 characters).

We will have some special expert guests from BMC Software participating on Jan. 8.

For Those Who Haven’t Done a Tweetchat …

You may not have participated in a Tweetchat previously. They generally move pretty fast, but you can learn a lot. We’ll also post a record of all the comments so that you can refer to it afterward. Here’s the Storify page containing all of our previous eWEEKChat compilations.

Please note that to maintain a semblance of order, please prefix your question or comment with the number of the question we are currently discussing. As an example, the moderator may post: “Q1: Is BYOC just an extension of BYOD, or is it DOA in EMEA, NA, SA and everywhere else?”

To which you might answer: “A1: I don’t know, but let me look up what all the acronyms mean first.” Or you might not answer that way.

A Tweetchat is a venue that is easy to use on any type of device, too. By the way, did you know that eWEEK is the only mainstream IT trade publication that has specific apps for Android and iOS devices?

Hope to connect with you Jan. 8, and use your collaboration network to tell your friends. Let’s have fun with this.
